Aerdenhout resident to sue over arrival of asylum seekers: 'A form of entertainment'

A resident of the affluent Dutch town of Aerdenhout has announced plans to take legal action against the government's decision to house asylum seekers in a local hotel.

The resident, who has not been named, argues that the arrival of the asylum seekers will damage the character of the town and reduce property prices.

The asylum seekers are due to arrive at the four-star Carlton President Hotel in Aerdenhout on Monday. The hotel has been requisitioned by the Dutch government to provide temporary accommodation for up to 150 asylum seekers.

The resident's lawyer, Geert-Jan Knoops, told Dutch media that his client believes the government's decision is "a form of entertainment" for the residents of Aerdenhout.

"The government is playing with the emotions of the people of Aerdenhout," Knoops said. "They are creating a situation where people are afraid and angry, and that is not fair."

The mayor of Aerdenhout, Han van Leeuwen, has said that he understands the concerns of the residents, but he insists that the asylum seekers are welcome in the town.

"We are a compassionate community, and we have a duty to help those who are in need," Van Leeuwen said. "These asylum seekers are fleeing war and persecution, and we should be doing everything we can to help them."
