Commanders Fail on Crucial Fourth Down vs. Eagles, Signature Win Under Daniels Will Have to Wait
Eagles Avoid Upset, Win 20-16 on Road
Washington's Late Push Falls Short in Disappointing Loss
The Washington Commanders' hopes for a signature win under new head coach Ron Rivera fell short on Sunday, as they dropped a disappointing 20-16 decision to the Philadelphia Eagles at FedExField.
Washington had a chance to tie the game with just over two minutes remaining, but quarterback Carson Wentz was sacked on fourth down, sealing the Eagles' victory.
The loss drops Washington to 2-4 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 3-3.
The Commanders had a chance to take the lead in the fourth quarter, but Wentz was intercepted by Eagles cornerback Darius Slay in the end zone with just over 10 minutes remaining.
Wentz finished the game 25-of-43 for 211 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. He was also sacked four times.
The Eagles took an early lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Miles Sanders, but the Commanders responded with a 3-yard touchdown run by Antonio Gibson to tie the game at 7-7.
The Eagles regained the lead on a 2-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jalen Hurts, but Washington kicker Joey Slye tied the game at 14-14 with a 44-yard field goal in the second quarter.
The Eagles took a 17-14 lead on a 26-yard field goal by Jake Elliott in the third quarter, and added another field goal in the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 20-14.
The Commanders had a chance to tie the game in the fourth quarter, but Slye missed a 48-yard field goal wide right.
Washington's defense played well, holding the Eagles to just 268 yards of total offense, but the offense was unable to generate enough points to win.
The Commanders will look to bounce back next week when they travel to face the Indianapolis Colts, while the Eagles will host the Dallas Cowboys.
