Exactly When to See 2024's Final 'Supermoon' Rise This Week
Final chance to see one of the biggest and brightest full moons of the year
February's full moon, also known as the Snow Moon, or Storm Moon, will reach its peak illumination on the evening of Tuesday, February 19, 2024. This full moon is also a supermoon, meaning it will appear slightly larger and brighter than usual because it will be at its closest point to Earth in its orbit.
When to see the Snow Moon
The exact time of the Snow Moon's peak illumination will vary depending on your location. In general, the best time to see the full moon is shortly after moonrise, when it is low on the horizon and appears larger.
In North America, the Snow Moon will rise in the east-northeast around sunset on Tuesday, February 19. It will reach its highest point in the sky around midnight and will set in the west-northwest around sunrise on Wednesday, February 20.
What is a supermoon?
A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon's closest approach to Earth in its orbit. This makes the moon appear slightly larger and brighter than usual. Supermoons are not particularly rare, occurring about three or four times a year.
Why is it called the Snow Moon?
The Snow Moon is the full moon that occurs closest to the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. It is also the last full moon of winter.
