Hunters Take Aim at Michigan’s Largest Big Game Animal

Season runs Nov. 15-30 in Lower Peninsula, Nov. 15-Dec. 31 in Upper Peninsula

The firearm deer season, Michigan’s most popular hunting season, begins Friday, Nov. 15, and runs through Nov. 30 in the Lower Peninsula and through Dec. 31 in the Upper Peninsula.

Deer hunting generates more than $2 billion for Michigan’s economy each year and supports more than 30,000 jobs. Hunting is also a key tool wildlife managers use to control the deer population, which helps reduce crop damage, vehicle collisions and the spread of disease.

In 2021, hunters harvested 325,929 deer during the firearm season. The DNR expects a similar harvest this year. The top deer-producing counties in 2021 were:
* Menominee: 9,195
* Dickinson: 8,516
* Iron: 7,759
* Alger: 7,426
* Marquette: 7,389

Hunters are reminded to follow all safety regulations, including:
* Always wear hunter orange.
* Be aware of your surroundings and identify your target before shooting.
* Never shoot at a deer that is moving or that you cannot clearly see.
* Report all hunting-related accidents to the DNR immediately.
