"It is completely over": Griezmann ends speculation about a France comeback
Former world champion Antoine Griezmann has put an end to speculation about a possible return to the French national team.
The 31-year-old striker, who retired from international football in March 2023, made the announcement in an interview with French newspaper L'Equipe.
"It is completely over," Griezmann told the newspaper. "I am very happy with my decision to retire from international football. I have had a great time with the national team, but it is time for me to move on."
Griezmann made 108 appearances for France, scoring 42 goals.
He was a key member of the team that won the 2018 World Cup, and he also played in the 2016 European Championship final.
However, Griezmann has been in poor form for the past two years, and he was left out of Didier Deschamps' squad for the 2022 World Cup.
In the interview with L'Equipe, Griezmann said that he was "disappointed" to be left out of the World Cup squad, but he understood the coach's decision.
"I was disappointed, but I respect the coach's decision," Griezmann said. "I am still a big supporter of the French national team, and I wish them all the best in the future."
Griezmann is currently playing for Atletico Madrid, and he has been in good form this season.
He has scored seven goals in 17 La Liga appearances, and he has also been a key member of the team's Champions League campaign.
Griezmann's decision to retire from international football is a blow to the French national team, but it is also a sign of the changing times.
The French team is now in a transition period, and Deschamps is looking to build a new team for the future.
