Jake Elliott Throws a Couple of Wrenched Kicks into Eagles’ Winning Mix
Philadelphia Eagles Defeat Indianapolis Colts 17-16 on Monday Night Football
Elliott’s Clutch Kicks Help Eagles Improve to 8-0
The Philadelphia Eagles escaped Lucas Oil Stadium with a hard-fought 17-16 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Monday Night Football. The Eagles’ defense held strong throughout the game, but it was kicker Jake Elliott who ultimately proved to be the hero.
Elliott connected on two crucial field goals in the fourth quarter, including a 33-yarder with just over two minutes remaining in the game. His heroics gave the Eagles a much-needed cushion and helped them improve to 8-0 on the season.
The Eagles’ win was their eighth straight, matching their best start to a season since 2004. They now have a two-game lead over the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East and are one of just two undefeated teams remaining in the NFL (the Kansas City Chiefs are the other).
The Colts, meanwhile, fell to 3-4-1 with the loss. They have now lost three straight games and are in danger of falling out of contention in the AFC South.
The game was a defensive struggle for much of the night. The Eagles took an early lead on a touchdown pass from Jalen Hurts to DeVonta Smith, but the Colts responded with a field goal and a safety to tie the game at 10-10 at halftime.
The second half was equally as tight. The Colts took the lead on a touchdown pass from Matt Ryan to Michael Pittman Jr., but the Eagles answered back with a touchdown run from Miles Sanders to tie the game at 17-17.
That’s when Elliott stepped up and hit his two fourth-quarter field goals to give the Eagles the win.
Elliott’s performance was a bright spot in an otherwise lackluster offensive performance by the Eagles. Hurts was just 18-of-35 passing for 190 yards and a touchdown, and the Eagles rushed for just 91 yards as a team.
But the Eagles’ defense came up big when it mattered most. They held the Colts to just 275 total yards and forced three turnovers, including two interceptions of Ryan.
The Eagles will look to continue their winning streak when they host the Houston Texans on Sunday. The Colts, meanwhile, will try to get back on track when they travel to face the New England Patriots.
