Russellville Holds on for First Playoff Win Since 2021
Indians Overcome Slow Start to Beat Muscle Shoals 28-21
Russellville's defense came up with big plays when they needed them most, as the Indians held on to beat Muscle Shoals 28-21 in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs Friday night.
The Indians (8-3) forced three turnovers in the second half, including two interceptions by senior cornerback Javion Hamlet. Muscle Shoals (7-4) had a chance to tie the game late, but Hamlet's second interception sealed the win for Russellville.
"Our defense played great in the second half," said Russellville coach John Ritter. "We made some adjustments at halftime, and they really stepped up."
The Indians offense also came up with some big plays in the second half. Quarterback Jayden Haston threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Ja'Darrius Mitchell to give Russellville a 21-14 lead in the third quarter. Haston also ran for a 1-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to give the Indians a 28-14 lead.
Muscle Shoals answered with a touchdown pass from quarterback Ty Higgins to wide receiver CJ Thornton, but the Indians defense held on to secure the win.
"This is a big win for our program," Ritter said. "We've been working hard all season, and it's nice to see it pay off."
The Indians will travel to face No. 2 seed Athens next week in the second round of the playoffs.
